As it goes sometimes in this business, the Rabbiteyes that were looking and tasting so promising have stalled and nosedived into an abrupt season’s end late this week. Perhaps it was the sudden onset of heat. We got a few calls this year from other people who were concerned that their bushes were not doing well, and that started some concerns here, but at the time it seemed that they were doing really, really good.
Anyway — it was good to see so many of you from previous years and great to meet so many new people and look forward to seeing y’all next year too.
Now… maybe its road trip time. Or something. Maybe a bunch of movies.

The bushes are loaded — bending over in some cases — with the weight of huge, sweet berries this year. The are still quite a few green ones, too, but we expect those to be stimulated into ripeness from the first week of picking. With the heavy picking these usually get the first week, hopefully we’ll get a couple of good Saturdays at least for those of you who can’t make it out during the week. While there aren’t as many bushes of this variety out here, this year’s crop is big and sweet! Don’t miss it if you can help it.
The updated, edited driving directions seem to be a lot more accurate. The Google maps page that shows directions also shows map coordinates and your GPS may or may not work with it, since there are about four different types of coordinates. See if it works for you. The GPS and orienteering map-savvy folks may be able to make the conversion.
Expect conditions to be really hot, too. Bring a hat, sunscreen and remember to stay hydrated! Ooo-wee!

Currently, an able-bodied picker can still get his or her fill, but it may take a little longer than it does on opening day. Walking through the field early in the morning, sampling as I go, I’m noticing that there are subtle changes in the flavor profile up and down the rows as well as from row to row. I don’t think I notice this as much when the bushes are really full, being so overwhelmed by the sheer abundance. As these Northern Highbush plants continue to wane, the Rabbiteye bushes are coming into sweeter fruition and we will send out the word that they are ready in the days to come.
Keep checking the message on the Blueberry Line to get in on the early picking of this variety. Their flavor is notably complex this year, with an initial burst of juicy familiar blueberry flavor, followed by a delayed second wave of subtle, signature sweetness. A rewarding delight for heat-tolerant seekers of these beauties — some are the biggest I’ve ever seen!
Oh — We’ve edited the driving directions on the map page to correct the google maps generated directions so that they make more logical sense and keep you off the old dirt county roads. Thanks for pointing that out, y’all! I’m gonna put up GPS coordinates as soon as I get a chance, too.
