When the first berries start to ripen it is sporadic at first, then suddenly as if over night, there is an explosion of ripe berries on all the bushes. If all goes well, our blueberries should be ready for harvest around the first week in June and continue through the month of June. The berries are at their best during the first three weeks of picking. The weather also has a great deal to do with the quality of the fruit. Too much rain lessens the sweetness and too much hot sun causes rapid deterioration of the ripe berries.
Please review the Special Notes or Considerations that follow:
* CALL FIRST: Anyone planning to come for blueberry picking should call that morning to check the availability of berries for that day as well as weather conditions. Our spring time thunder storms can sometimes create havoc for us, as well as other unforeseen circumstances that could prevent opening for picking on any given day. We will also have a new phone message recorded for each day during the harvest season (903-674-2477). That way we can avoid causing anyone any inconvenience, especially driving to our farm and finding we are closed for the day. It should be noted that cell phone reception can be somewhat sporadic at our farm location.
* SUGGESTED ITEMS: Pickers should plan on wearing hats with wide brims, and long sleeve shirts are also advisable if you are sensitive to the sun. Some days can get very hot, very quickly so we cannot stress enough the importance of coming early. Most days are really nice and breezy. It’s also advisable not to wear sandals due to possible fire ant encounters although we do our best to control them. It is also advisable to bring water for drinking, and handy wipes for cleaning hands after berry picking. Some people bring their own stools or folding chairs which allows them to sit at a bush for extended periods. Children are welcome and seem to really enjoy the berry picking experience but we ask that they be properly supervised.
* MISC. ITEMS: During the first hour of early morning picking there is some dew on the grass and bushes, but it does not last long. We also try to keep the grass mowed short so there are no problems with weeds. We plan on having clean portable restroom facilities this year.
