(A work in progress)
Every so often, societies, from microbes to men, cyclically find themselves in a time of uncertainty, even panic. It seems to happen much more frequently than people even seem to collectively recall, it seems. Then, the dust clears, and just as cyclically there is a period of new interest — a frontier.
Currently, numerous pioneers are hearing a new call. Locally grown food, produced by real people you might even call friends or neighbors, is being sought to an unprecedented extent by urban and suburban-dwellers who are increasingly concerned with the quality and origin of what they are putting on their tables and into the mouths of their families. To such an extent that young people are staying in the country instead of heading off to the city, laid off professionals are reading the writing on the wall, as well as older, more experienced practitioners are being filled with a spirit that renews their life-long mission with an almost unprecedented vision and zeal — to fulfill that need. Our species is currently recognizing a do-or-die initiative, once again (never mind that a new space race is on to manufacture giant solar energy facilities in orbit around earth) — concept is as much a part of this frontier as the land — the territory is a geographical terrain as well as a conceptual one. Maybe not every initiative will survive, but the rush is on. The bubble will swell, and out of this period of lighting out for the new territories, new habits will be formed and no matter what comes afterward, as many as these pioneers that can be sustained by their localities will become a permanent part of the lives of the people that are sustained by these once-pioneers (now essential and non-negotiable).
(to be continued — your thoughts and/or criticisms welcome)
